    Selective acylation of mono-deacetyl lyso-GM1, i.e. beta-D-galactopyranosyl-(1 --> 3)-2-acetamido-2-deoxy-beta-D-galactopyranosyl-(1 --> 4)-(alpha-D-neuraminyl-(2 --> 3))-beta-D-galactopyranosyl-(1 --> 4)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 1)-(2S,3R,4E)-2-amino-4-octadecen-1,3-diol, with N-succinimidyl-[1-C-14]stearate afforded labeled mono-deacetyl GM1, i.e. beta-D-galactopyranosyl-(1 --> 3)-2-acetamido-2-deoxy-beta-D-galactopyranosyl-(1 --> 4)-(alpha-D-neuraminyl-(2 --> 3))-beta-D-galactopyranosyl-(1 --> 4)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 1)-(2S,3R,4E)-2-[1-C-14]octadecanamido-4-octadecen-1,3-diol, in good yield. Its condensation with either N-succinimidyl-digoxigenyl-3-O-methyl carbonyl-epsilon-amino caproate or N-succinimidyl-D-biotinyl-epsilon-aminocaproate led to radioactive GM1 derivatives carrying a tag for immune-electron microscopy at the sialic acid residue. These GM1 derivatives could be hydrolyzed to the corresponding GM3 derivatives by treatment with GM1-beta-galactosidase and beta-hexosaminidases. There was no further degradation by sialidases due to the bulky tag in the sialic acid residue. The uptake of biotin labeled GM1 by human skin fibroblasts, rat neuroblastoma cells B104 and human neuroblastoma cells SHSY5Y was 0.85, 0.58 and 1.62 nmol lipid/mg cellular protein, respectively, after an incubation for 66 h at 37 degrees C and was similar to that of untagged GM1. The uptake of digoxigenin labeled GM1 by these cell types was, however, significantly higher (3.1, 6.8, and 20.0 nmol lipid/mg cellular protein, respectively). Both the biotin and digoxigenin labeled GM1 analogs were catabolized to the corresponding GM2 and GM3 derivatives in lysosomes of cultured cells. This demonstrates that these synthetic analogues are suitable for studying, by immune-electron microscopy, their endocytosis and distribution in intralysosomal membranes.     (EN) There is provided a new branched primary alcohol composition and the sulfates, alkoxylates, alkoxy sulfates and carboxylates thereof exhibiting good cold water detergency and biodegradability. The branched primary alcohol composition has an average number of branches per chain of 0.7 to 3.0, having at least 8 carbon atoms and containing both methyl and ethyl branches. The primary alcohol composition may also contain less than 0.5 atom% of quaternary carbon atoms, and a significant number of ethyl branches, terminal isopropyl branches, and branching at the C3 position relative to the hydroxyl carbon. The process for its manufacture is by skeletally isomerizing an olefin feed having at least 7 carbon atoms or by dimerising a C6-C10 olefin, followed by conversion to an alcohol, as by way of hydroformylation, and ultimately sulfation, alkoxylation or both to obtain a detergent surfactant. Useful skeletal isomerization catalysts include the zeolites having at least one channel with a crystallographic free diameter along the x and/or y planes of the [001] view ranging from 42 to 70 nanometer. Useful dimerisation catalysts include a combination of a nickel carboxylate with an alkyl aluminium halids, or a combination of a nickel chelate with an alkyl aluminium alkoxide.(FR) L'invention concerne une nouvelle composition d'alcool primaire ramifié et les sulfates, alcoxylates, sulfates d'alcoxy et carboxylates de ladite composition présentant de bonnes qualités de détergence et de biodégradabilité à l'eau froide. La composition d'alcool primaire ramifié est caractérisée par un nombre moyen de ramifications par chaîne de l'ordre de 0,7 à 3,0 avec au moins 8 atomes de carbones, contenant à la fois les ramifications méthyl et éthyl. La composition d'alcool primaire peut contenir également moins de 0,5 % d'atomes de carbone quaternaire, avec un nombre considérable de ramifications éthyles, des ramifications isopropyl terminales, et une ramification en C3 de l'hydroxyle. La composition est préparée par isomérisation de squelette d'un apport d'oléfine contenant au moins 7 atomes de carbone ou par dimérisation d'une oléfine en C6-C10, puis transformation en alcool par hydroformylation et, enfin, par sulfatation et/ou alcoxylation de façon à obtenir un tensioactif détergent.     A branched alcohol composition comprising a branched ether primary alcohol represented by the formula (I) wherein R1 represents hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl radical having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, R2 represents a hydrocarbyl radical having from 1 to 7 carbon atoms, x is a number ranging from 0 to 16, wherein the total number of carbon atoms in the alcohol ranges from 9 to 24; and alkyl ether sulphate, alcohol alkoxysulphate and alkanol alkoxylate derivatives thereof, which are useful in detergent compositions.
