    The invention provides a process of making an ortho- and/or meta-boronic acid phenol or derivative of such boronic acid comprising: reacting a cyclobutenone with an alkynyl boronic acid or derivative thereof in the presence of a transition metal olefin complex catalyst. The invention also provides a compound having the structure of Formula (Ia) or Formula (Ib): (Ia) (Ib) wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 are each independently selected from the group consisting of: H and a substituent and R is a boronic acid or derivative thereof and a compound having the structure of Formula (IIa) or Formula (IIb): (IIa) (IIb) wherein R1, R2 and R4 are each independently selected from the group consisting of: H and a substituent and R is a boronic acid or derivative thereof. In addition, the invention provides products or compositions of matter comprising compounds having the structure of Formula (Ia), (Ib), (IIa) or (IIb) and a detectable amount of a transition metal, as well as a compound library comprising at least two compounds of the invention, a process of making an ortho- and/or meta-aryl phenol comprising: reacting a cyclobutenone with an alkynyl boronic acid or derivative thereof in the presence of a transition metal olefin complex catalyst and an aryl cross-coupling partner, and a process of making an ortho- and/or meta-aryl phenol comprising: reacting an ortho- and/or meta- boronic acid phenol or derivative thereof with an aryl cross-coupling partner.
