  Gegenstand der Erfindung sind α, ω-Dihydroxyalkan-α,α-diphosphonsäuren der allgemeinen Formel worin R einen Phenylrest beziehungsweise einen substituierten Phenylrest oder ein H-Atom und n eine ganze Zahl im Bereich von 1 bis 9 bedeuten, deren wasserlösliche Salze, sowie deren Verwendung als Komplexbildner. Die Herstellung der neuen Diphosphonsäuren erfolgt durch Umsetzung von ω-Amino-α-hydroxyalkan-α, a-diphosphonsäuren mit salpetriger Säure beziehungsweise Natriumnitritlösung.
