bromides react with complete selectivity in the presence of a secondary bromide. The generality of this approach is demonstrated by its extension to the use of alkyl iodides and alkyl tosylates, as well as borylation reactions employing bis(neopentyl glycolato)diboron as the boron source.

Under 400 nm visible light irradiation, primary and secondary alkylchlorides can be activated in the presence of bis(neopentyl glycolato)diboron and an tert-butoxide to form alkylradicals, which then react with diboron(4) compounds to afford alkylboronic esters. This protocol is a catalyst-free and practical approach to valuable alkylboronic ester intermediates.
