    A series of bis-aryl amide (13-57 and 66-81) and bis-aryl urea (58 and 85) antagonists of platelet-activating factor (PAF) was prepared that contain, separating the two aromatic rings, linear amide linkages of the form -(CH2)nCONH- (n = 0-2), -OCH2CONH-, and -(CH2)nNHCO- (n = 0-1), branched amide linkages of the form -(CH2)nN(COR)- (n = 1-3, R = CH3 or n-C3H7), and -N(COCH3)CH2-, and urea linkages of the form -NHCONH- and -CH2N(CONHCH3)-. These compounds were examined for their ability to inhibit PAF-induced platelet aggregation of rabbit platelets. These in vitro data were compared to similar data obtained for a number of known PAF antagonists. The compounds were evaluated in vivo, in the mouse, for their ability to prevent death induced by a lethal challenge of PAF. The relationships between the biological activity and the nature, lipophilicity, and position of substituents of the aromatic rings were studied. Best activity was observed for compounds having linkages of the type -CH2CONH-, -CH2N(COR)-, and -CH2NHCO-. Many of these compounds inhibit PAF-induced platelet aggregation with IC50's under 1 muM.

    A monolayer of 4-(octadecyloxy)benzoic acid at the air-solution interface has been used to induce oriented nucleation of three-dimensional (3-D) crystals of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA) monohydrate. The two-dimensional (2-D) crystalline structure of this monolayer in a self-assembled uncompressed state, both on a water subphase and on a solution containing HBA, was determined by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GID) using synchrotron radiation. Crystalline domains of large coherence length were formed on water subphase at 14 degrees C, and the fraction of the monolayer in the ordered state was much increased on HBA solution. The agreement between the observed and calculated GID data was found to be sensitive to the conformation and orientation of the monolayer molecules. These results demonstrate the ordered binding of the HBA solute to the amphiphile benzoic acid head groups to form hydrogen-bonded cyclic dimers between the two carboxylic acid moieties. The GID method was complemented by other surface sensitive techniques such as specular X-ray reflectivity, surface pressure-area isotherms, and nonlinear optics. A resulting model arrangement of the monolayer, based on the molecular packing, has been proposed for the induced nucleation of the 3-D crystals of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid monohydrate attached to the monolayer.
  • Studies on Effects of Compatibilizers in Over Coating Layer Materials for TFT Panels

    Over coating layer (OCL) materials were prepared by mixing acrylate copolymer and epoxy compound. The shelf life of the OCL materials could be extended, because of suppression of the crosslinking reaction between the acrylic acid and epoxy groups during storage at room temperature. However, the microphase separation between the acrylate copolymer and the epoxy compound was caused during the post-baking process, leading to the formation of rough surface, and consequently decrease in the transparency. The compounds having longer alkyl chains and acid group such as palmitic acid and 2-ethylhexyl maleate were found to prevent the microphase separation.
