Complex tripodal tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren)-based ligands have been prepared in a single-pot reaction of tren with 3 equiv each of cyclohexenone and a benzaldehyde derivative (i.e., from seven components and three molecular types). The highest yield of product was obtained for p-nitrobenzaldehyde, the most electrophilic aldehyde used. (C) 2009 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

The copper(II) coordination compound of an N-functionalised derivative of tris(2-aminoethyl)amine forms a cavity that is an excellent fluoride ion host, generating a CuâF entity with a very short distance (182 pm) and characterised by a fluoride ion devoid of any additional intermolecular interactions.

distances identical, their equatorial bond lengths [Cu(1)-N eq ] differ significantly. Compound C4 was found to have a more uniform distribution of Cu(1)-N eq bond lengths [2.166(3)-2.232(3) A] than C3 [2.077(3)-2.352(3) A], one Cu-N eq distance being unusuallylong, when compared with similar bonds in a range of copper(II) complexes of tren derivatives.
