Novel 1-aza-3-oxa-4-silacyclohex-1-ene compounds, and tautomers thereof, having utility as chemical modifiers or cross linkers for hydroxy-containing organic or inorganic substances are disclosed, said compounds being represented by the general formula (I) ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each independently denotes a monovalent organic group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms selected from the group consisting of saturated hydrocarbon groups and unsaturated hydrocarbon groups, R.sup.3 deontes an organic group having 1 to 30 carbon atoms selected from the group consisting of saturated hydrocarbon groups and unsaturated hydrocarbon groups, said R.sup.3 groups optionally containing a heteroatom selected from the group consisting of oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, silicon, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine, Me denotes a methyl radical and n is an integer having a value of 1 to 4.
