A novel tandem bis-aldol reaction of ketone with paraformaldehyde catalyzed by polystyrenesulfonic acid in aqueous medium delivers 1,3-dioxanes in high yield. This one-pot, operationally simple microwave-assisted synthetic protocol proceeds efficiently in water in the absence of organic solvent, with excellent yield.

A composition and method for inhibiting the corrosion of steel containing greater than about 9% chromium in the presence of at least one mineral acid, especially at temperatures above 250 F. The composition is made of a corrosion inhibitor selected from phenyl ketone, phenyl ketone with a quaternary salt of a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic aromatic compound, or cinnamaldehyde with a quaternary salt of a nitrogen-containing aromatic compound and an acid soluble metal from antimonium or bismuth.
The embodiments described herein generally relate to methods and chemical compositions for use with wellbore treatment processes. In one embodiment, a composition is provided comprising a mineral acid and a retardation agent selected from the group of an amine containing compound, an amide containing compound, lignosulfonate, and combinations thereof.
Prins Cyclization of Styrenes or Acetophenone Catalyzed by DBSA in Water

Dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) was proved to be an efficient catalyst for Prins cyclization of styrenes and formaldehyde or acetaldehyde in water. A tandem dehydration/Prins cyclization reaction using a tertiary alcohol and formaldehyde as substrates proceeded very well by using DBSA as catalyst. Acetophenone, which is less reactive compared with styrene, can also react with formaldehyde when catalyzed by DBSA in water to afford 1,3-dioxan-5-ylphenylmethanone in good yield.
