The reaction between acetylenes and cyclopropylcarbene-chromium complexes in hexane affords exclusively cyclopentadienone derivatives in good yield, which are readily hydrolyzed to cyclopentenediones. Reaction of alkynes having bulky substituents with pentacarbonyl[cyclopropyl(methoxy)methylene]chromium(0) (1) provided cyclopentadienone derivatives. Cyclopentadienones were easily hydrogenated to the corresponding cyclopentenones usingchromiumhexacarbonyl and water, with no problems resulting from overreduction to the cyclopentanone.
