The novel and efficient preparation of several racemic beta-sulfonamidopropionate esters is described. Treatment of the racemic esters with Chymotrypsin or Subtilisin Carlsberg (purified or detergent grade) provided the corresponding (S)-carboxylic acids in 60-90% yield. These acids (75 to >98 % e.e.) are useful starting materials for the synthesis of P-3 site modified renin inhibitors.

The compounds of the formula ##STR1## in the form of optically pure diastereomers, mixtures of diastereomers, diastereomeric racemates or mixtures of diastereomeric racemates as well as pharmaceutically usable salts thereof inhibit the activity of the natural enzyme renin and can accordingly be used in the form of pharmaceutical preparations in the control or prevention of high blood pressure and cardiac insufficiency.
Isothiazolidin-3-one-1,1 dioxide, 3-oxo-1,2,5-thiadiazolidine-1,1,-dioxide and derivatives thereof, reduce or inhibit the activity of serine proteases. Such compounds are useful as anti-inflammatory and anti-metastatic agents.
