    A subterranean formation is treated to reduce its permeability by contacting it with an aqueous polymerizable composition comprising a polymerization monomer, a polymerization catalyst having a latent period, and an alcoholic compound which is a cyclic ether containing a hydroxymethylene substituent on a carbon atom bonded to the ether oxygen, or an aliphatic alcohol having a carbon-to-carbon double bond or a carbon-to-carbon triple bond. The monomer is an olefinic substituted amide and a usual catalyst is a peroxide.

    A process for improving the flame retardancy, hygroscopic, soil release and other properties of a polymer substrate is provided in which the substrate is contacted with a suitable aqueous mixture containing a water-soluble monomer and an organic halogen-containing hydrophobic carrier compound at a temperature of between about 40°C to 100°C. Polymerization of the monomer is thereafter initiated by a chemical or physical initiator to form a polymer evenly disposed on the substrate. The flame retardancy, hygroscopic, soil release and other surface properties of the substrate are thereby improved. The mixture may be in the form of an emulsion wherein the hydrophobic carrier compound is emulsified by an appropriate agent. The invention also pertains to the improved substrates prepared in accordance with the present process.

    The invention relates to a method of preparing sintered shapes, comprising the steps of: (1) forming a green body from a mixture comprising (A) at least one inorganic powder with (B) at least one polymer derived from (a) at least two sulfo monomers or (b) a combination of (i) a sulfo monomer with (ii) at least one monomer selected from acrylic compounds, acrylonitriles, vinyl lactams and vinyl pyrrolidones and maleic acids, anhydrides or salts, provided the mixture is substantially free of polysaccharide;and (2) sintering the green body. Inorganic shapes made from the compositions of the present invention have relatively high fired densities; small uniform grain sizes; and relatively low porosity.
