    Topical compositions, containing tetracycline, tetracycline salts or tetracycline derivatives, which do not cause skin yellowing, are disclosed. These compositions are formulated such that, upon application to the skin, the tetracycline component recrystallizes in small, irregular crystals at the skin surface. Preferred compositions are buffered at a pH between about 2.0 and 4, such as by the addition of citric acid. The method of treating skin disorders such as acne, using these compositions is also disclosed.

    Esters of monosaccharides and their lower alkyl glycosides are effective both as surfactants and as bleach activators (peracid precursors). The compounds are non-toxic and biodegradable. They act as nonionic surfactants and are effective in soil removal from textiles, e.g. of fatty soiling. In the presence of a hydrogen peroxide source, the sugar derivatives are perhydrolyzed during the washing process to form long-chain peracid. This enhances the bleaching effect, especially on hydrophobic stains.

    A process for producing a saccharide fatty acid monoester comprises reacting an immobilized thermostable lipase on a mixture comprising: (A) one or more of acyl donors selected from saturated and unsaturated fatty acids with 6 to 22 carbon atoms, lower alkyl esters of said fatty acids and glycerol esters of said fatty acids, (B) one or more of saccharides selected from monosaccharides with 5 to 7 carbon atoms, disaccharides composed of hexose, sugar alcohols with 4 to 6 carbon atoms, ethers of monosaccharides with 5 to 7 carbon atoms and monohydric alcohols and ethers of disaccharides composed of hexose and monohydric alcohols, and (C) one or more of alcohols selected from secondary alcohols and tertiary alcohols.
