    Four ruthenium (II) complexes of the formulae [Ru(bpy)(L-1)(2)](ClO4)(2) . H2O (A1), [Ru(bpy)(L-2)(2)](ClO4)(2) . H2O (A2), [Ru(bpy)(L-3)(2)](ClO4)(2) . H2O (A3), [Ru(bpy)(L-4)(2)](ClO4)(2) . H2O (A4) (where L-1 = N-(2-pyridylmethylene) phenyl amine, L-2 = N-(2-pyridylmethylene) 4-(methyl) phenyl amine, L-3 = N-(2-pyridylmethylene) 4-(chloro) phenyl amine, L-4 = N-(2-pyridylmethylene) 4-(fluoro) phenyl amine and bpy = 2,2'-bipyridyl) have been synthesized. In addition to these ruthenium complexes, we have also been able to isolate four imidazopyridinium perchlorate compounds B1-B4 from the same reactions. The X-ray crystal structures of one representative ruthenium complex (A2) and the imidazopyridinium perchlorate compound (B2) have been determined. The Ru(II) center in the complex is coordinated by six N donors with a distorted octahedral geometry. The imine ligands (L) act as bidentate N,N donors. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
