4-Indolylbutanals from rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation of allylindoles as precursors of benzofused indolizines

New 4-indolylbutanals have been prepared via a rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation of differently substituted N-allylindoles. The aldehydes bearing an electron-donating group on the indole nucleus 3-position can evolve into benzofused indolizines via a one pot intramolecular cyclodehydration. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Synthesis of 4‐(Indol‐1‐yl)butanals via Rhodium‐Catalyzed Hydroformylation of 1‐Allylindoles

The rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation of new 1-(beta-methallyl) indoles la-a carried out with Rh-4 (CO)(12) as the catalyst precursor, at 100 atm total pressure and 100 degrees C, produces the 4-(indol-l-yl)-3-methylbutanals 2a-e as the sole products in high yields. The synthesized 4-indolylbutanals are stable under the adopted conditions and are isolated and characterized here for the first time. The preparation of the starting l-allylindoles is described too.
