(R,S)-serine-1-13C was incubated in a culture of Escherichia coli cells to produce (S)-trytophan-1-13C. Abstract Contradictory results in the literature concerning the role of l -tryptophan in the biosynthesis of the indigo precursors, indican and isatan B, in four higherplants belonging to four plant families have been resolved.
