    The multicomponent reaction of malononitrile, aldehyde and a third reaction partner such as naphthol/4-hydroxycoumarine/2-hydroxynaphthoquinone/kojic acid/enolizable ketone or thiol in the presence of imidazole as an organocatalyst provides very interesting molecular diversity. In an almost neutral reaction medium, this protocol provides easy access to highly functionalized 2-amino-4H-chromenes, dienes and 2-amino pyridines using in situ-generated aryl/alkylylidenemalononitrile derivatives obtained from the reaction of aldehydes and malononitrile along with various nucleophiles under reflux conditions in ethanol. This methodology is useful for the easy access of a wide range of structurally diverse functionalized molecules having potential application in biological systems.

    A green, efficient and mild one-pot synthesis of pyrano[3,2-b]pyran derivatives via a three component reaction in the ionic liquid [bmim]BF4 is reported. This method has the advantages of environmental friendliness, operational simplicity, high yields and reuse of the ionic liquid.

    A novel heterogeneous silica nanosphere-supported ferrocene-containing ionic liquid catalyst (SiO2@Imid-Cl@Fc) was designed and synthesised and was systematically characterised by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The catalytic activity of the SiO2@Imid-Cl@Fc catalyst was tested in a one-pot, three-component reaction of malononitrile and kojic acid with 15 aromatic aldehydes at room temperature under ultrasound irradiation. The products were pyrano[3,2-b]pyran derivatives, four of which are new. The catalyst exhibited good catalytic performance over short reaction times (15–20 min) and could be recycled at least five times without significant loss of activity.

    The first efficient biocatalytic route for the synthesis of kojic acid derivatives was developed in presence of an enzyme. In this process, benzaldehydes, malononitrile and kojic acid were used as starting materials while lipase from Aspergillus niger was the promiscuous biocatalyst giving high conversion (82–95%) of kojic acid derivatives in aqueous medium.
