Racemic derivatives of alpha-amino acid beta,gamma-thioenol ethers have been synthesized from homoserine through a gamma-elimination on a sulfoxide derived from aspartaldehyde. Optically active derivatives were efficiently prepared from L-methionine by a Pummerer like reaction.
