    Lipidic amphiphiles equipped with the trans-2-aminocyclohexanol (TACH) moiety are promising pH-sensitive conformational switches ("flipids") that can trigger a lipid bilayer perturbation in response to increased acidity. Because pH-sensitivity was shown to improve the efficiency of several gene delivery systems, we expected that such flipids could significantly enhance the gene transfection by lipoplexes. Thus a series of novel lipids with various TACH-based head groups and hydrocarbon tails were designed, prepared and incorporated into lipoplexes that contain the cationic lipid 1,2-dioleoyl-3-trimethylammonio-propane (DOTAP) and plasmid DNA encoding a luciferase gene. B16F1 and HeLa cells were transfected with such lipoplexes in both serum-free and serum-containing media. The lipoplexes consisting of TACH-lipids exhibited up to two orders of magnitude better transfection efficiency and yet similar toxicity compared to the ones with the conventional helper lipids 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (DOPE) or cholesterol. Thus, the TACH-lipids can be used as novel helper lipids for efficient gene transfection with low cytotoxicity. (C) 2015 Published by Elsevier B.V.

    Additives suitable for improving the flow and/or depressing the cloud point of crude oils, lubricating oils and especially fuel oils are polymers containing defined alkyl groups of at least 8 carbon atoms chain length. Such polymers are either (a) of a mixture of monomers having only two alkyl groups one being at least 3 carbon atoms longer than the other or (b) of a mixture of monomers having only three alkyl groups each differing by at least 3 carbon atoms and the middle alkyl group being half the combined length of the other two. Alternatively, the polymer may be derived from a monomer having the two defined alkyl groups (a) or the three defined alkyl groups (b).

    Cold flow properties are improved by adding in minor proportion by weight to a distillate fuel oil a polymer of a C₁ to C₁₇ alkyl vinyl ether. This polymer may be a homopolymer, a mixture of homopolymers, a copolymer of alkyl vinyl ethers of different alkyl chain length, a copolymer of one or more alkyl vinyl ethers with one or more copolymerisable monomers or a mixture of such copolymers. Typical copolymers are copolymers of alkyl vinyl ethers with alkyl acrylates, alkyl methacrylates, olefins, dialkyl fumarates or maleates, eg copolymers of n-butyl vinyl ether with di(n-tetradecyl) fumarate. Other polymers are copolymers of an alkyl vinyl ether with an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride, subsequently reacted with an alcohol or an amine or both, eg a copolymer of methyl vinyl ether and maleic anhydride reacted with n-tetradecanol, n-hexadecanol or a mixture of these alcohols.
