An efficient synthesis of calothrixinB (2) is demonstrated starting from 9H-carbazol-4-ol, having two one-pot reaction sequences as key steps. As a novel observation, DMF–methanol was shown to be a hydride donor for reduction of aldehyde to alcohol. Unexpectedly, nucleophilic substitution of benzyloxy by methoxy group was observed.
New and efficient routes for the synthesis of murrayaquinone A and murrayanine

routes were established for the synthesis of biologicallyactive murrayaquinone A and a new method was developed for synthesis of murrayanine from the same starting material as 4-hydroxy carbazole. During the synthetic course a few novel observation were recorded, which include two one pot reaction sequences and C–N bond cleavage by sodiumcyanoborohydride.
