Iron-based metal–organic framework, Fe(BTC): an effective dual-functional catalyst for oxidative cyclization of bisnaphthols and tandem synthesis of quinazolin-4(3H)-ones
An iron-basedmetal–organicframework [Fe(BTC) (BTC: 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate)] has been shown to be an active and heterogeneous catalyst for both oxidative cyclization of methylenebisnaphthols and a modern tandem process (an in situ oxidation-aminal formation-oxidation sequence). Such a potential catalytic utility of Fe(BTC) makes it quite attractive for sustainable industrial chemistry.
Reduction of DDHQ and TCC esters by NaBH4-its specificity in the presence of Alkyl/Aryl esters

DDHQ/TCC esters 3a–f, 7a–g were prepared either by oxidation of spiroketones 1 with DDQ/-chloranil or by condensation of acid chloride with DDHQ/TCC. NaBH4 reduction of unsaturated DDHQ 3a–b and TCC 7a–c esters gave the corresponding allylic alcohols in good yield without any observable 1,4-addition products. derivatives 4a–f and DDHQ esters 5a–f (- isomer 6a–f, - isomer 7a–f). While the aryl substituted spirokeone 17a gave a 2:1 mixture of 19a and the corresponding - isomer, the aryl substituted spiroketones 17b–d gave exclusively - isomers 19b–d. Spironaphthalenones 1b–g on reaction with hydroxylamine hydrochloride gave the expected pyrrolotropones 2b–g. Furanotropone 6, postulated as an intermediate in the formation of pyrrolotropones, remained unchanged on reaction with hydroxylamine hydrochloride in ethanol. Reaction of unsymmetrical spironaphthalenones 1h–o with NH2OH.HCl gave the rearranged pyrrolotropones 2h–o.
