The first successful intermolecular Heck reaction between Baylis–Hillmanadducts and aryl iodides was achieved under the conditions comprising Pd(OAc)2/n-Bu4NBr/KOAc in CH3CN.

keto/aldehyde acetals (X = OMe) followed by the addition of a Lewis acid leads to five-, six-, and seven-membered hydroxycycloalkene carboxyates. The utility of this method is demonstrated in the synthesis of the α-alkylidene lactone natural products subamolide D and E.

There was no obvious correlation of cyclization selectivity with calculated electron densities as has been suggested for electrophilicaromaticsubstitutionreactions. However, the calculated selectivities determined by a gas-phase (B3LYP/6-31G* + ZPVE) comparison of the relative rates of cyclization were in remarkably good agreement with the observed selectivities
