A novel class of photochromic diarylethene derivatives based on the hybrid skeleton of six-membered pyrimidine and five-membered thiophene moieties has been firstly synthesized. The substituent effects on their properties, including photochromism, fatigue resistance, and fluorescence, have been systematically investigated.
