An enantioselective chemical synthesis of arene cis-dihydrodiols has been realized from 2-pyrones through sequential ytterbium-catalyzed asymmetric inverse-electron-demand Diels-Alder (IEDDA) reaction of 2-pyrones and retro-Diels-Alder extrusion of CO2 .
