    Disclosed are well working and treating fluids comprising a saturated aqueous saline solution, a particulate water soluble salt which is insoluble in the saturated saline solution, xanthomonas gum, and an epichlorohydrin crosslinked hydroxypropyl starch derivative wherein the xanthomonas gum and the epichlorohydrin cross­linked hydroxypropyl starch derivative interact to synergistically enhance the suspension characteristics of the fluid and to decrease the fluid loss of the fluid. Also disclosed is an additive composition for enhancing the suspension characteristics and reducing the fluid loss of saturated brine based well treating fluids comprising specified proportions of xanthomonas gum and epichlorohydrin crosslinked hydroxypropyl starch.

    The invention provides brine based well drilling and servicing fluids which exhibit relatively thermally stable rheological and filtration characteristics. The fluids comprise a brine, an amorphous silica viscosifier, a biopolymer viscosifier, a fluid loss control additive, and a bridging agent. By utilizing both a silica viscosifier and a biopolymer viscosifier to provide the desired rheological characteristics, the fluids have enhanced thermal stability thus maintaining their suspension and hole cleaning properties over an extended temperature range.

    The invention provides water base well drilling and servicing fluids containing a biopolymer viscosifier and a water soluble polyalkylene glycol shale stabilizing additive therein having enhanced thermal stability, as indicated by the low shear rate viscosity at 0.06 sec-1, the enhanced thermal stability being provided by an amorphous silica viscosifier therein. A method of enhancing the thermal stability of aqueous base well drilling and servicing fluids containing a biopolymer viscosifier and a water soluble polyalkylene glycol shale stabilizing additive therein is disclosed which comprises adding to the fluid an amorphous silica viscosifier.

    The invention provides well drilling and servicing fluids, and methods of drilling, completing, or working over a well therewith, preferred fluids comprise an aqueous liquid, a water soluble polymer viscosifier (preferably xanthan gum), a polymeric fluid loss control additive (preferably a partially depolymerized partially crosslinked hydroxyalkyl ether derivative of starch or a hydroxyalkyl ether derivative of a partially crosslinked and partially depolymerized starch), a bridging agent comprising a particulate calcined magnesia that has an Activity Index greater than about 800 seconds, and an additive selected from the group consisting of citric acid, alkali metal salts of citric acid, ammonium citrate, and mixtures thereof in an amount sufficient to increase the low shear rate viscosity of the fluids, preferably from about 0.05-5 ppb, most preferably from about 0.15-3 ppb. The invention further provides a method of increasing the low shear rate viscosity of fluids which contain a water soluble polymer and a calcined magnesia bridging agent which has an Activity Index greater than about 800 seconds.
