Heating of o-allyl-substituted acylbenzenes with potassium tert-butoxide in DMF with simultaneous irradiation from a high-pressure mercury lamp afforded substitutednaphthalenes, including arylnaphthalenes. 2-(o-Tolyl)-substituted aromatic aldehydes were converted into phenanthrenes under the same conditions. A formal synthesis of tanshinone I has also been achieved.

Irradiation of 2-allylated acylbenzenes in DMF in the presence of potassium tert-butoxide constitutes a novel synthesis of substitutednaphthalenes, including arylnaphthalenes. Typical examples include the conversions (1) → (2), (8) → (11) and (15 → (16).

Syntheses of substituted naphthalenes and naphthols are described. Based on Claisen rearrangement, ring-closing metathesis (RCM), and related reactions, isovanillin was successfully transformed into a series of substituted naphthalenes and naphthols with good overall yields.

A novel synthesis of substituted naphthalenes was studied. Starting from isovanillin, basing on Claisenrearrangement and ring-closing metathesis (RCM), a series of 1-alkoxy-2-methoxynaphthalenes and 1-alkoxy-2-methoxy-8-methylnaphthalenes together with a series of 2-alkoxy-3-methoxynaphthalenes were synthesized.
