Re-entrant Isotropic Phase between Lamellar and Columnar Mesophases

Tetradental cis-enaminoketone Ni (II) complexes with different molecular shape have been synthesized. Intramolecular hydrogen bonds, which stiffen the mesogenic core and restrict rotation of some molecular parts, have been introduced in these compounds. In the case of molecules with two hydrogen bonds and alkoxy terminal chains filling the inner molecular space, the uncommon phase sequence Iso-D-h-Iso(re)-SmA (series III-3) was detected. For the first time, it was observed that the isotropic re-entrant (Iso(re)) phase (short-range order) is separating the columnar (D) (high-temperature) and the lamellar (SmA) (low-temperature) phases, both revealing long-range ordered structures.

We report the synthesis and characterization of a new heptanuclear cadmium cluster complex formed within a Schiff basemacrocycle and study its surprising dimerization in the solid-state and solution to form capsules.
Series of binuclear copper and nickel complexes having two tetradental enaminoketone centres have been synthesized and examined. The rectangular shape of the mesogenic core allows the formation of lamellar (SmA) or columnar (Colh, Colr) phases depending on the number of attached aliphatic chains. In some complexes the columnar phases have molecules tilted in columns. An unexpected phase sequence Colr upper–Colh–Colr lower, upon lowering temperature, was detected, which is a type of re-entrancy. The crystallographic unit cells of the rectangular columnar phases are not the same. Intramolecular interaction between metallic centres was found in ESR studies and confirmed by cyclic voltammetry.

The synthesis and characterisation of four new Schiffbase-likeligands with long alkyl chains in the outer periphery and their iron(II) complexes with methanol and pyridine as axialligands is reported.
