    The binuclear cyclopalladated compounds [Pd-2(mu-OH)(2)(L-n)(2)] (1) derived from imines HLn = p-CnH2n+1O-C6H4-CH=N-C6H4-OCnH2n+1-p(n = 6,10) react with carboxylic acids to give the derivatives [Pd-2(mu-ox)(2)(L-n)(2)] (2) with a planar core for oxalic acid, and [Pd-2(mu-OOCR)(2)(L-n)(2)] (3-7) compounds with a non-planar ridge tent structure for other RCOOH acids: (3) R = CmH2m+1 (m = 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17); (4) R = CH2(OCH2CH2)(p)OCH3 (p = 1, 2); (5) R = CH2-C6H4-OCqH2q+1-p(q = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12); (6) R = C6H4-OCrH2r+1-p(r = 4, 10); (7) R = C*H(OH)CH3. The acids used were designed to explore the effect on the thermal properties of the compounds prepared of systematic variations in the type of carboxylato ligand, which induce structure, packing, and polarity changes, and in the length of the carboxylato chain. Most of the complexes prepared, even when far from planar, show liquid crystal behavior and display nematic, smectic A and smectic C phases. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    Replacement of the carboxylic acid group in position 2 of the indole with an acetic or propionic acid substituent led to a decrease of inhibitory potency. Enzyme inhibition was optimal when the acyl residue in position 3 had a length of 12 or more carbons. Conformational restriction of the acyl residue did not influence activity. Introduction of alkyl chains at position 1 of the indole with 8 or more carbons

  • A crossover from rod-shaped to bent-shaped in symmetric isoflavone liquid crystal trimers exhibiting unusual mesomorphic behaviour

    A new series of symmetric isoflavone-based liquid crystalline trimers, 1,3-bis[3-(4′-decyloxyphenyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one-7-oxy]alkyloxy}benzenes with 3–12 methylene units in both lateral spacers have been synthesized and characterized by polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. As expected, the phase transition temperatures strongly alternate as the number of methylene units in the spacers changes. An unusual mesomorphic behaviour was observed wherein short and long trimers exhibited smectic A (SmA) and/or smectic C (SmC) phase(s) while homologues with intermediate spacer length were purely nematogenic (N) in a broad temperature range. Formation and stabilization of the uniaxial nematic phase is caused by change of molecular geometry from rod-shaped for short homologues to strongly bent-shaped for long homologues.

  • Influence of bromoalkyloxy side chain on mesomorphic behavior in heterocyclic 7-(4-bromoalkyloxy)-3-(4′-decyloxyphenyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-ones

    A new homologous series of isoflavone-based ethers, 7-(4-bromoalkyloxy)-3-(4'-decyloxyphenyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-ones were synthesized and characterized. The mesomorphic properties of all homologues were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). Enantiotropic smectic A (SmA) phase was observed for all homologues. The structure property study was carried out by comparing the mesomorphic behavior of the homologues with those previously reported analogues. The bromine atom from the alkyloxy side chain of the benzene ring fused to the heterocyclic moiety was found to be capable of changing the mesomorphic properties. (C) 2011 Guan Yeow Yeap.     Over coating layer (OCL) materials were prepared by mixing acrylate copolymer and epoxy compound. The shelf life of the OCL materials could be extended, because of suppression of the crosslinking reaction between the acrylic acid and epoxy groups during storage at room temperature. However, the microphase separation between the acrylate copolymer and the epoxy compound was caused during the post-baking process, leading to the formation of rough surface, and consequently decrease in the transparency. The compounds having longer alkyl chains and acid group such as palmitic acid and 2-ethylhexyl maleate were found to prevent the microphase separation.
