Racemic 2-deoxyerythrose 4-phosphate was synthesized and one enantiomer of this compound was found to be a substrate for Escherichia coli 3 -deoxy-D -arabino-heptulosonate 7-phosphate synthase, the first enzyme of the shikimate pathway. When the reaction was carried out in deuterium oxide, an enzyme-catalyzed regio- and stereoselective incorporation of deuterium into the product was observed. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. [GRAPHICS]The carbonylative opening of terminal epoxides under mild conditions has been developed using CO2-(CO)(8) as the catalyst. Under I atm of carbon monoxide and at room temperature in methanol, propylene oxide is converted to methyl 3-hydroxybutanoate in up to 89% yield. This transformation is general for many terminal epoxides bearing alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkoxy, chloromethyl, phthalimido, and acetal functional groups. The opening takes place without epimerization at the secondary stereocenter.

Both geometrical isomers of the strigol analogue carba-GR24, (E)-3-[2-(4-methyl-5-oxo-2,5-dihydrofuran-2-yl)ethylidene]-3,3a,4,8b-tetrahydro-2H-indeno[1,2-b]furan-2-one (1) and 7 (Z isomer), were prepared separately. These analogues, in which the vinyl ether oxygen atom in GR24 has been replaced by a methylene function, are completely inactive for the stimulation of germination of seeds of the parasitic weeds Striga hermonthica and Orobanche crenata. Bioassays in which 1 was tested as an inhibitor of germination gave no indication as such.
