    This invention relates to a novel immunoadjuvant, an adjuvant component, and vaccines containing the adjuvant component. The adjuvant includes phytol or a phytol derivative. The adjuvant component, when combined with a soluble or particulate antigen, provides a vaccine with an enhanced ability to induce both humoral and cytotoxic immune responses while displaying reduced toxicity and/or adverse side effects over vaccines that include the antigen but without the benefit of this adjuvant component.

    This invention relates to a process for selective capture, isolation and purification of chlorinated sucrose compounds, including chlorinated sucrose, their precursors and derivatives, including trichlorogalactosucrose (TGS), directly from chlorinated reaction mixture by column chromatography on adsorbents and under conditions which result in specific and selective affinity towards one or more of chlorinated sucrose compound. The process also integrates de-esterification of chlorinated sucrose esters adsorbed on the adsorbent while they are being treated with desorbent. The process also provides a novel approach to concentration and crystallization of TGS. The chlorinated sucrose derivatives, including TGS, thus isolated are substantially free from most impurities, salts and organic solvents. The process has high recovery of more than 95% in terms of desired chlorinated sucrose derivatives including TGS.

    A method for treating hyperglycemia and/or reducing serum glucose levels in a patient that includes administering to the patient a therapeutically effective amount of an amine polymer is disclosed. In one embodiment, the amine polymer is aliphatic. Examples of polymers useful in an embodiment of the invention include sevelamer hydrogen chloride and colesevelam. The invention includes the use of amine polymers such as a cross-linked polymer characterized by a repeat unit having the formula: 1 and salts and copolymers thereof, where n is a positive integer and x is zero or an integer between 1 and about 4. Also described is a use, for the manufacture of a medicament, of a polymer that lowers serum glucose.
