The invention relates to novel compounds useful as polymerization initiators or precursors for polymerization initiators. The invention further relates to a method of making the polymerization initiators and resulting polymers. The invention also relates to polymer compositions comprising the polymer of the invention and further components such as extender oils, fillers, vulcanizing agents etc., and to corresponding vulcanized polymer compositions and articles comprising vulcanized parts made from the vulcanized polymer composition.

Treatment of tetrahydropyranyl (or tetrahydrofuranyl) ether of allylic alcohol with tributylmanganate provided 7-octene-1,5-diol (or 6-hepten-1,4-diol) in good yields. The reaction of propargylic tetrahydropyranyl ether with tributylmanganate is also described.

We present a strategy that difunctionalizes unactivated olefins in 1,2-positions with two carbon-based entities. This method utilizes alkyl/arylzinc reagents derived from olefin-tethered alkyl/aryl halides that undergo radical cyclization to generate C(sp3)-Cu complexes in situ, which are intercepted with aryl and heteroaryl iodides. A simple, environmentally friendly, and efficient tetrahydrofuranylation of alcohols has been developed using NaHSO4–SiO2 (0.5 mol %) as a catalyst under solvent-free conditions to yield corresponding THF ethers in good to excellent yields.
