Free from protection! A general, chemoselective, protecting‐group‐ and organic‐solvent‐free route to stilbenes and heterostilbenes involving the direct synthesis of triethyl benzylic and allylic phosphonium salts from the corresponding alcohols and their microwave‐assisted, aqueous Wittig reactions is described.

A direct synthesis of 1,3-dienes and 1,3,5-trienes from the reaction of semi-stabilized ylides and a range of saturated and unsaturated aldehydes is reported in water as solvent, employing sodium hydroxide as base. The water-soluble phosphine oxide side product is removed simply by aqueous partitioning of the organic products.

phosphine ligands L [PMe3, PEt3, PBun3, or P(C6H11)3] in organic solvents (benzene or diethyl ether) gives the zwitterionic adducts [Fe(η2-CH2 CHCH2PR3)(CO)2(NO)]. The structure has been assigned on the basis of i.r. and n.m.r. spectra and conductivity measurements. The reactivity and the decomposition mechanism are discussed.

(BF4–) anions. Melting point analysis by visual inspection and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed that 14 of the salts are ionic liquids with melting points below 100 °C. Five are liquids at room temperature, although two exhibit supercooling behavior and eventually solidify over time. In addition to the standard characterization techniques used to verify compound identity, thermal behavior
