    Hydroxy functional acrylate and methacrylate monomers prepared via lipase—catalyzed transacylation reactions

    Candida antarctica lipase B (CAL-B, Novozyme 435) catalyzes the transacylation of methyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate with diols and triols in 2-methyl-2-butanol at 50 degrees C. Under the experimental conditions, up to 70 mol% of the acyl donor methyl acrylate was converted. Methyl methacrylate is the less efficient acyl donor (up to 60 mol%) due to the higher sterical hindrance in the enzymatic transacylation. Under the reaction conditions high yields of the mono-acylated products are obtained, which contain minor amounts of bis(meth)acrylates. In addition it was observed that Novozyme 435 catalyzes regioselectively the acylation of the primary hydroxyl groups. In comparison with the chemical catalyzed route no selectivity was observed for unsubstituted diols. For substituted diols more mono-acylated product was formed in the lipase-catalyzed reaction than in the chemical catalyzed reaction. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    A thermosetting coating composition which may have nonvolatile solids content as high as 60%or greater and which may be employed as an automotive topcoat. The composition, exclusive of pigments, solvent, reactive and non-reactive diluents and other non-reactive components, consists essentially of: (A) A binder composition consisting essentially of: (1) Between about 30 and about 75 weight percent of one or more low viscosity resins selected from hydroxy functional acrylic polymers, hydroxy functional polyethers and hydroxy functional polyesters, each of which (i) is substantially soluble in the solvent of the composition and (ii) has a number average molecular weight of between about 1000 and about 2500; and (2) Between about 70 and about 25 weight percent of one or more crosslinked dispersion polymers each of which is substantially insoluble in the solvent of the composition; and (B) An amino crosslinking agent in an amount of between about 5 and about 40 parts per 100 parts of said binder composition. The crosslinked dispersion polymer is prepared by free radical polymerization of 0.5 to 3.5 weight percent of di-,tri- or tetravinyl monomers and 99.5 to 96.5 weight percent of at least one other copolymerizable monoethylenically unsaturated monomer, in the present of a (i) hydrocarbon dispersing liquid which is a solvent for the polymerizable monomer, but a non-solvent for the resulting crosslinked polymer, and (ii) polymeric dispersion stabilizer which is solvated by said dispersing liquid and associated with said crosslinked polymer so as to maintain a separation between particles thereof, thereby inhibiting coagulation of said particles, wherein polymerization is carried out at elevated temperature such that the dispersion polymer first forms and then is crosslinked.

    A fast curing coating composition that is adapted for use as an automotive topcoat and which upon curing forms a hard, glossy, durable coating exhibiting excellent resistance to solvents and water. The coating composition which may contain greater than about 55 percent by weight of nonvolatile solids and, exclusive of pigments, solvents and other nonreactive components, consists essentially of: (A) a polyepoxide resin having a number average molecular weight (Mn) of between about 140 to about 3,000; (B) a reactive catalyst comprising at least one phosphonic acid derivative; (C) an amino resin crosslinking agent; and (D) optionally, a hydroxy functional additive. The phosphonic acid derivative is included in the composition in an amount sufficient to provide between about .8 and about 1.4 equivalents of acid functionality for each equivalent of epoxy functionality in the polyepoxide resin and the amino resin crosslinking agent is included in the composition in an amount sufficient to provide at least about .4 equivalents of nitrogen crosslinking functionality for each equivalent of hydroxy functionality included in the composition.

    A stabilizer capable of forming a stable dispersion in an organic liquid includes a copolymer bearing pendent ethylenic unsaturation which comprises the reaction product of ethylenically unsaturated monomers (A) and copolymer reactant (B), said ethylenically unsaturated monomers (A) bearing functionality capable of condensation reaction with complementary functionality of said copolymer reactant (B) which comprises a random copolymer of (i) from about 20 to about 45 weight percent of ethylenically unsaturated monomers, homopolymers of which would be substantially insoluble in a selected organic liquid; (ii) from about 40 to about 75 weight percent of ethylenically unsaturated monomers, homopolymers of which would be substantially soluble in said organic liquid; and (iii) from about 2 to about 15 weight percent of ethylenically unsaturated monomers bearing said complementary functionality capable of condensation reaction with said ethylenically unsaturated monomers (A), said ethylenically unsaturated monomers (A) being reacted with said copolymer reactant (B) in an amount sufficient to react with at least about 10 percent of said complementary functionality of said copolymer reactant (B). The stable dispersions may be incorporated in coating compositions comprising (1) an hydroxy film-forming component, (II) a crosslinking agent bearing functionality capable of reacting with the hydroxy groups of the film-forming component, and (III) a flow control additive of which the dispersion forms part.

    A thermosetting coating composition with enhanced flexibility and impact strength and excellent weatherability adapted for use as an automotive topcoat which upon curing forms a hard, glossy, durable coating. The coating composition comprises:- (A) a modified hydroxy acrylic copolymer which is the stepwise reaction product of:- (i) a copolymer bearing pendant hydroxyl groups and having a number average molecular (Mn) of between about 1000-5000, (ii) a dicarboxylic acid anhydride comprising at least about 50 percent by weight of an alkyl hexahydrophthalic anhydride, and (iii) a monoepoxide functional monomer comprising at least about 90 percent by weight of a C2-C10 monoepoxide functional monomer; (B) an amine-aldehyde or polyisocyanate crosslinking agent; (C) optionally a hydroxy functional additive, and (D) solvent. The anhydride is reacted in an amount sufficient to esterify at least about 30 percent of the pendant hydroxyl groups of copolymer (i) thereby generating carboxyl functionality, substantially all of which is thereafter reacted with the monoepoxide functional monomer. The crosslinking agent is included in the composition in an amount sufficient to provide at least about 0.5 equivalent of crosslinking functionality per equivalent of hydroxy functionality included in the composition either as a hydroxyl group of the modified hydroxy acrylic copolymer or as a hydroxyl group of the optional hydroxy-functional additive. (ii) dicarboxylic acid anhydride comprising at least 50 percent by weight of an alkyl hexahydrophthalic anhydride, wherein (i) and (ii) are reacted in an amount sufficient to esterify from 30 to 100 percent of the hydroxyl groups of the copolymer, thereby generating pendant carboxyl groups; and (iii) a monoepoxide functional monomer comprising at least 90 percent by weight C - C10 monoepoxide functional monomers, wherein the monomer is reacted with the pendant carboxyl groups of the polymer reaction product of (i) and (ii) so as to provide at least 1.0 equivalent of epoxide groups per equivalent of the pendant carboxyl groups generate pendant hydroxyl groups; (B) an amine-aldehyde or polyisocyanate crosslinking a gent; (C) 0-50 weight percent based on the total weight of (A), (B), (C) and (L) of a hydroxy functional additive having a number average molecular weight (Ln) of from 150 to 6000, preferably 500-2500; and (D) solvent. The amine-aldehyde crosslinking agent is included in the composition in an amount sufficient to provide at least 0.60, preferably from 0.75 to 3.75, equivalents of nitrogen crosslinking functionality for each equivalent of hydroxyl functionality included in the composition either as a hydroxyl group on the modified hydroxy acrylic copolymer or as a hydroxyl group on the hydroxy functional additive. The polyisocyanate crosslinking agent is included in an amount sufficient to provide 0.5 to 1.6 reactive isocyanate groups for each equivalent of hydroxy functionality included in the composition as an hydroxyl group on either the said copolymer or said additive. The composition preferably contains at least 60% by weight and preferably at least 70% by weight of non-volatile solids. In addition, the coating composition of this invention may include additives such as catalysts, antioxidants, U.V. absorbers, flow control or wetting agents, antistatic agents, pigments, plasticizers,
