In order to clarify the mechanism of the self-inactivation of bleomycin, a synthetic model for the metal binding site of bleomycin is treated with Fe(III)H2O2 or Fe(II)O2, and the degradation products are isolated and characterized. A breakdown at the amino acid side chain of the metal binding site has been demonstrated.
