The Cope rearrangement of acyclic 1,5-dienes having an electron-withdrawing group at carbon-3 and an alkyl substituent at carbon-2 is effectively catalyzed by palladium dichloride. This reaction can be employed to achieve clean γ-allylation of vinyl esters and acids.
