  The invention provides sulfo-protected polysaccharides and methods for preparing sulfo-protected polysaccharides, as well as intermediate compounds useful in such methods. A saccharide having a hydroxyl or amine protected with a haloalkyl sulfonyl group like trifluorethylsulfonate (CF3-CH2-SO3-) is obtained by: - sulfonating with e.g. Me3NSO3, and - alkylating with 2,2,2-trifluorodiazoethane (CF3-CH2-N2) and can be racted with another saccharide to provide the sulfo-protected polysaccharide. This method is especially useful in glycosaminoglycan (GAG) synthesis.
