    Oxidative degradation by chromic acid in glacial acetic acid has been developed as an effective method for location of a branch in a saturated carbon chain. Detection of cleavage products by use of gas phase chromatography allows convenient application of the method to samples of 3–10 mg. Several branched-chain acids and a branched-chain hydrocarbon have been found to yield the expected cleavage products;

    Fuel compositions for internal combustion engines, and more particularly, fuel compositions for use in fuel-injected internal combustion engines are described. The fuel compositions comprise a major amount of a liquid hydrocarbon fuel and a minor, property-improving amount of a hydrocarbon-soluble dispersant prepared generally by the post-treatment of a nitrogen-containing composition with mono- and polycarboxylic acids which may be aliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acids although aromatic polycarboxylic acids are preferred. The nitrogen-containing compositions which are post-treated in accordance with the present invention are obtained by reacting an acylating agent with alkylene polyamines or alkanol amines. When fuel conpositions of the present invention are utilized in internal combustion engines, and in particular, fuel-injected internal combustion engines, the amount of solid deposits of the various parts of the internal combustion engines are reduced. In particular, the use of such fuels prevents or reduces intake system deposits and injector nozzle deposits. Accordingly, methods for reducing or preventing the buiid-up of deposits in internal combustion engines also are described.

    Emulsifiers are disclosed which comprise the reaction product of component (I) with component (II). Component (I) comprises the reaction product of certain carboxylic acids or anhydrides, or ester or amide derivatives thereof, with ammonia, at least one amine, at least one alkali and/or at least one alkaline-earth metal Component (II) comprises certain phosphorus-containing acids; or metal salts of said phosphorus-containing acids, the metals being selected from the group consisting of magnesium, calcium, strontium, chromium, manganese, iron, molybdenum, cobalt, nickel, copper, silver, zinc, cadmium, aluminum, tin, lead, and mixtures of two or more thereof. These emulsifiers are useful in water-in-oil explosive emulsions.

    Lubricant compositions are disclosed which comprise (A) at least one neutral or basic metal salt of at least one acidic organic compound, wherein the metal in the salt is magnesium, barium or a mixture thereof, and (B) optionally at least one hydrocarbyl-substituted ashless dispersant in which each hydrocarbyl substituent has a number average molecular weight up to about 1500, provided that the compositions contain no more than 0.06 weight percent calcium, not more than 0.5 weight-percent hydrocarbyl-substituted ashless dispersant in which a hydrocarbyl substituent has a number average molecular weight greater than about 1,500, and optionally not more than 0.5 weight-percent of polymeric viscosity improvers such as olefin copolymer, styrene-diene, and/or polymethacrylate viscosity improvers. Additive concentrate formulations for making such lubricant formulations are also disclosed. Methods for lubricating sump-lubricated fuel-injected alcohol-powered internal combustion engines are described which utilize these lubricant compositions to help prevent the formation of deposits in fuel injectors and provide advantageous rust and corrosion inhibition properties. These formulations can also be useful for lubricating combustion engines powered by petroleum- and coal-derived fuels.

    This invention relates to a composition, comprising: (A) a boron-containing overbased material; (B) a phosphorus acid, ester or derivative therof; and (C) a borated epoxide or borated fatty acid ester of glycerol. In one embodiment the inventive composition further comprises (D) a thiocarbamate. These compositions are useful in providing lubricants and functional fluids, particularly automatic transmission fluids, with enhanced antiwear properties. In one embodiment these compositions also provide such lubricants and functional fluids with enhanced extreme-pressure and/or friction-modifying.
