An efficient and practical approach to 3a-azidofuroindolines and -pyrroloindolines involving an iodine-catalyzed azidation/cyclizationcascade of tryptophols and tryptamines with NaN3 was developed. Further transformation of the C3-azidated product provided a key intermediate for the total synthesis of psychotriasine.
