  • Mating disruption methods for the control of insect pests

    The present invention provides a mating disruption method for the control of insect pests by means of a sex pheromone which can maintain the sex pheromone concentration in the air surrounding a group of plants at a high level for a long period of time while controlling the release rate of the sex pheromone from dispensers at an economical level, and can hence produce a more powerful mating-disrupting effect by use of a given amount of the sex pheromone. Specifically, using dispensers, a sex pheromone is released in a field sprinkled with water so that the soil has a water content of 20 to 100% during the breeding period of insect pests. Thus, the sex pheromone is prevented from being adsorbed to the soil and, as a result, the sex pheromone concentration in the air can be maintained at a high level for a long period of time. Alternatively, a sex pheromone is released in an open field where the surface of the soil is covered with a covering material that is less apt to adsorb sex pheromones than the surface of the soil, or in a house field where the surface of the soil and all or part of the inner surface of the house are covered with a covering material that is less apt to adsorb sex pheromones than the surface of the soil. Thus, the sex pheromone is prevented from being adsorbed to the soil and, as a result, the sex pheromone concentration in the air can be maintained at a high level for a long period of time.

    There are provided a sustained release pheromone preparation capable of prolonged release of a pheromone substance without the need to increase the membrane thickness, and a method for controlling an insect pest using the same. More specifically, there is provided a sustained release pheromone preparation including: at least one pheromone substance and a container for enclosing the pheromone substance therein, the container comprising a polymer membrane which includes a polymer blend of: an aliphatic polyester of general formula (1) below; and a poly(hydroxyalkanoate) of general formula (2) below. There is also provided a method of controlling an insect pest, including a step of installing the sustained release pheromone preparation in a field to allow the pheromone substance to permeate through the polymer membrane and to be released into the field.

    There is provided a composition for forming an aerosol, an aerosol sprayer for insect pest mating disruption, and a method for insect pest mating disruption, thereby reducing disadvantageous effects caused by falling to a ground surface and oxidative decomposition of the sprayed particles. More specifically, there is provided the composition including an aerosol stock solution containing an aliphatic linear aldehyde having 10 to 20 carbon atoms and a non-alcoholic diluent, and a propellant, wherein a weight ratio of the aerosol stock solution to the propellant is from 45:55 to 65:35; the sprayer including the composition and a pressure resistant container for enclosing the composition therein, wherein sprayed particles at a spray travel distance of 15 cm have a median particle size (Dv50) at 25°C of from 35 to 65 µm by a volume-based cumulative particle size distribution and; the method using the aerosol sprayer; and the like.

    The present invention provides a sustained release pheromone formation comprising the sex pheromone substance which is an aldehyde compound wherein the formation can prevent the degradation of the aldehyde compound and release the compound at an uniformed rate during the control term of the subjective pest insects. The sustained release pheromone formation is obtained by mixing an aliphatic derivative of which number of carbon atoms is equal to or less than that of the sex pheromone substance with a C 10-18 aldehyde which is a sex pheromone and then filling the resulting liquid mixture in a plastic container.
