    An optically active or racemic a-hydroxyaldehyde of formula wherein R, represents a C6-C14 aryl group, C1-C10 alkyl group, C1-C10 alkenyl group, C2-C10 alkynyl group, C2-C14 aralkyl group, or a group containing a functional group in the organic portion of said groups and R: represents a C1-C10 alkyl group, C1-C10 alkenyl group, C1-C10 alkynyl group, C7-C14 aralkyl group, C6-C14 aryl group or a group containing a functional group in the organic portion of these groups, which is an important intermediate for preparation of pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals and can be prepared by reacting an optically active or racemic compound of formula wherein A represents a C6-C14 aryl group or a C1-C4 alkyl or alkoxy group- or halogen-substituted C6-C14 aryl group and R is as defined above, with a Grignard reagent, and thereafter hydrolyzing the reaction product. The compound of formula (1) above can for example be prepared by reaction of an arylglyoxal with an optically active or racemic 2-iN-substituted aminomethyl)pyrroiidine or by reacting a Grignard reagent with an optically active or racemic. diazabicyclooctane derivative which itself can be prepared from a glyoxylate ester or glyoxylate ester hemiacetal and a 2(-N-substituted aminomethyl)pyrrolidine.

    Optically active or racemic diazabicyclooctane derivatives of formula wherein A represents a C6-C14 aryl group or a C1-C4 alkyl or alkoxy group- or halogen-substituted C6-C14 aryl group and R3 represents a C1-C4 alkyl group. These compounds can be prepared by reacting a glyoxylate ester or glyoxylate ester hemiacetal with a 2(-N-substituted aminomethyl)pyrrolidine, and can be used to prepare optically active and racemic α-hydroxyaldehydes which are important intermediates in the preparation of pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals.

    New urea derivatives, a process for their preparation and their use for the hardening of hydroxyl group-containing polymers are described. The urea derivatives according to the invention have the general formula 1 in which R1-R7 represent a hydrogen atom or a linear or branched C1-C4-alkyl group, preferably methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl or isobutyl group, wherein R1-R7 may be identical or different, and R8 represents a linear or branched C1-C6-alkyl group, preferably a methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl or isobutyl group. The urea derivatives of the general formula 1 according to the invention are prepared by reacting a compound of the general formula 2 in which R9 represents a unit from the group -CHO, -CH(OH)-OR8 and -CH(OH)2 and R8 is defined as above, with a urea derivative of the general formula 3 in which R1-R6 are defined as above and optionally followed by etherification of the reaction product obtained with an alcohol of the general formula X-OH, in which X represents a linear or branched C1-C4-alkyl group. The urea derivatives according to the invention contain no oligomeric fractions and they are extremely suitable for hardening hydroxyl group-containing polymers. They are superior to the reaction products of ethylene ureas and dioxylate derivatives known from the prior art.

    Urea derivatives of formula 1 for the hardening of hydroxyl group-containing polymers. 1 wherein each of R 1 -R 7 is a hydrogen atom or a linear or branched C 1 -C 4 -alkyl group, preferably methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl or isobutyl, R 1 -R 7 being identical or different, and R 8 is a linear or branched C 1 -C 6 -alkyl group, preferably methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl or isobutyl.
