Europium complexes with new β-diketone ligands with fluorene for organic electroluminescent (EL) devices have been synthesized and their properties examined. The absorption spectra of the complexes were varied by changing the conjugated system of the β-diketone; also, the energy transfer from the host material to the europium complexes and the intramolecular energy transfer have been improved. Concerning the volatility, the thermal properties of the europium complexes were improved by using phenanthroline derivatives. We fabricated organic EL devices using the synthesized complexes, and investigated the luminance of the devices.

Developed is a technique according to which a nitrogen-containing bicyclic heterocyclic compound can be manufactured directly from nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds in a short period of time through a small number of steps without using expensive agents and a starting material that takes time and effort to synthesize. A method for manufacturing a nitrogen-containing bicyclic heterocyclic compound includes a synthesis step of synthesizing a nitrogen-containing bicyclic heterocyclic compound such as bipyrimidine, bipyrazine, or biquinoline by reacting, in a reaction solvent, one nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound and another nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound with a solution containing an alkali metal.

In continuation of the work reported in Part I, several more bipyridyl analogues have been prepared and the absorption spectra of the cuprous and ferrous complexes determined. The results follow the pattern of the previous series of compounds.

The π-system in a series of three fac-[Mn(α-diimine)(CO)3Br] complexes is extended from 2,2′-bipyridine (bpy) to 2-(2-pyridyl)quinoline (pq) to 2,2′-biquinoline (bqn). The effects on photochemical mechanism, electrochemistry, and electroreduction of CO2 is observed via cyclic voltammetry, bulk electrolysis, and UV-vis and IR spectroscopies.
