  According to an illustrative embodiment, provided herein are paramagnetic chemical exchange saturation transfer MRI contrast agents having a tetraazacyclododecane ligand and a paramagnetic ion that provides a ratiometric imaging measurement that can be used to measure biological parameters including pH, temperature, reactive oxygen species, and specific enzymes, among others.
