  A process for the preparation of 3-carboxyl-1-methylpyrrol-2-acetic acid of formula (1): and alkali metal salts thereof, comprises reacting acetone-bicarboxylic acid or an alkali metal salt thereof in an aqueous medium with methylamine and a halo-acetaldehyde, preferably chloroacetaldehyde, at a temperature from about 5°C to about 25°C. The resulting product is an intermediate suitable for organic syntheses, in particular for the preparation of 5-arylolyl-pyrrol-alkanoic acids which are known anti-inflammatory agents in the pharmaceutical field.
