  Polymers of carbon monoxide and one or more olefinically unsaturated compounds are prepared by contacting with a catalyst composition comprising a Group VIII metal and a compound of the general formula R¹M¹-R-M²R² wherein M¹ and M² are chosen from sulphur, selenium and tellurium, R¹ and R² represent optionally polar-substituted hydrocarbyl groups and R represents a bivalent bridging group containing at least two carbon atoms in the bridge.
