    A solid catalyst component for olefin polymerization comprising titanium, magnesium and a compound of the general formula (I) wherein R1 and R2 are independently a C3 straight or branched hydrocarbon group, R3 is hydrogen or a C1-4 straight hydrocarbon group, R4 is a C1-4 straight or branched hydrocarbon group or a C3-4 aliphatic cyclic hydrocarbon group when R3 is hydrogen, R4 is the same C1-4 straight hydrocarbon group as R3 when R3 is a C1-4 straight hydrocarbon group, and n is an integer of 1 to 10. A catalyst for olefin polymerization, containing this catalyst component, obtains a high activity with high stereospecificity.

    A method for producing a solid catalyst component for olefin polymerization produces a novel solid catalyst component for olefin polymerization that achieves excellent olefin polymerization activity and activity with respect to hydrogen during polymerization, and can produce an olefin polymer that exhibits a high MFR, high stereoregularity, and excellent rigidity. The method includes a first step that brings a magnesium compound, a tetravalent titanium halide compound, and one or more first internal electron donor compounds selected from specific aromatic dicarboxylic diesters into contact with each other to effect a reaction, followed by washing, a second step that brings a tetravalent titanium halide compound and one or more second internal electron donor compounds into contact with a product obtained by the first step to effect a reaction, followed by washing, and a third step that brings one or more third internal electron donor compounds into contact with a product obtained by the second step to effect a reaction.

    The highly efficient selective monohydrolysis of symmetric diesters has been applied to monohydrolysis of several dialkyl malonates and their derivatives. The best conditions apply 0.8-1.2 equiv of aqueous KOH with a co-solvent, THF or acetonitrile, at 0 degrees C. The procedure is highly practical, yielding the corresponding half-esters in high yields in a straightforward manner, without inducing decarboxylation. It was found that the selectivity tends to become higher with increased hydrophobicity. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
