Novel 1,8-naphthylene-bridged para- and metacyclophanes were efficiently synthesized as a single isomer by the intramolecular [2 + 2] photocycloadition of 1,8-bis(p- and m-rmvinylphenyl)-naphthalenes, respectively. By this method, syn-cyclophanes were selectively obtained in both cases.
