The eta(4)-dienyl tricarbonyliron complex 8 has been used as a valuable building block en route to the 2,5-disubstituted-1,4-dioxane 4. Particularly noteful is the new regioselective etherification reaction of 8 with the suitably protected secondary glycerol 11 through the non-isolated organometallic cation 13.
