  Abstract The stereocontrolled synthesis of a chiral, polyhydroxy 1,7-dioxaspiro-[5,5]undecene from d -glucose is described. The bicyclic system with a different pattern of substitution can be found in a number of biologically important natural products such as the avermectins and the milbemycins.
