    In this paper, tetraphenylethylene (TPE) units, a well-known aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active group, are utilized to construct the hyperbranched polymer HP-TPE-Cz with carbazole moieties, a good hole-transporting and electroluminescent group, through an “A2 + B4” approach by using a one-pot Suzuki polycondensation reaction. For comparison, its analog linear polymer LP-TPE-Cz, also constructed from these two moieties, was prepared. These two polymers exhibit interesting aggregation-induced emission enhanced (AIEE) behavior and act as explosive chemosensors with high sensitivity both as nanoparticles and in solid state, due to the presence of TPE units. Also, the HP-TPE-Cz PLED device exhibited a remarkably enhanced current efficiency (2.13 cd A−1) and luminescence efficiency (5914 cd m−2), compared with its analog linear polymer LP-TPE-Cz (1.04 cd A−1, 1654 cd m−2).

  • New deep-blue emitting materials based on fully substituted ethylene derivatives

    New blue fluorescent compounds containing tetra-substituted ethylene moieties have been designed and synthesized. These materials, 1,2-di(4′-tert-butylphenyl)-1,2-bis(4′-(anthracene-9-yl)phenyl)ethene [BPBAPE, 1A], 1,2-diphenyl-1,2-bis(4′-(anthracene-9-yl)phenyl)ethene [PBAPE, 1B], 9,10-bis(4-(1,2,2-tris(4-tert-butylphenyl)vinyl)phenyl)anthracene [BTBPPA, 2A], and 9,10-bis(4-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)phenyl)anthracene [BTPPA, 2B], were synthesized through Suzuki and McMurry reactions. By fabricating multilayered non-doped OLED devices using these new blue materials, we achieved luminance efficiencies of 4.00 lm W−1 (10.33 cd A−1 at 8.1 V) for BPBAPE [1A] and 1.82 lm W−1 (3.93 cd A−1 at 6.8 V) for BTPPA [2B] at 10 mA cm−2. The maxima in the electroluminescence spectra of ITO/2-TNATA (60 nm)/NPB (15 nm)/BPBAPE [1A] and BTPPA [2B] (30 nm)/Alq3 (30 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (200 nm) devices were found to be 475 and 452 nm respectively. The BPBAPE [1A] and BTPPA [2B] devices exhibited sky blue emission (0.195, 0.303) and deep blue emission (0.159, 0.135) at 10 mA cm−2 respectively.

  • Specific Detection of <scp>d</scp>-Glucose by a Tetraphenylethene-Based Fluorescent Sensor

    A conceptually new "light-up" biosensor with a high specificity for D-glucose (Glu) in aqueous media has been developed. The emission from a tetraphenylethene (TPE)-cored diboronic acid (1) was greatly boosted when the fluorogen was oligomerized with Glu because of restriction of the intramolecular rotations of the aryl rotors of TPE by formation of the oligomer. Little change in the light emission was observed when 1 was mixed with D-fructose, D-galactose, or D-mannose, as these saccharides are unable to oligomerize with the fluorogen.

    Blue emitters are necessary for achieving full-color displaying OLEDs, however, most blue emitters show low efficiency, short lifetime or serious efficiency roll-off, hindering the development of OLED techniques. In this research, a nonpolar symmetric aggregation-induced emission (AIE) emitter was designed and constructed through facile steps, with the triphenylamine-end, anthracene-spacer and tetraphenylethene (TPE)-center. This emitter exhibited good thermal stability and aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE) characteristics, based on which non-doped blue OLED device was readily fabricated with the maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 2.7% and also with no efficiency roll-off even at 1000 cd m(-2), indicative of high efficiency and good stability as fluorescent emitter.

    In this paper, tetraphenylethylene (TPE) units, one of the typical aggregation-induced emission (AIE) moieties, are utilized to construct a new functional polyfluorene (PF) P1, which exhibited the exciting property of the aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE), instead of the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) of normal PFs, and could probe the explosive with high sensitivity both in the nano-particles and solid state. Three other TPE-containing polymers, P2-P4, were also successfully prepared, and demonstrated good performance as explosive chemosensors and light-emitting materials. P3, bearing carbazole as hole-transporting units showed the best performance with a maximum luminance efficiency of 1.17 cd/A and a maximum brightness of 3609 cd/m(2) at 12.9 V in its light-emitting diode device.
