Metal complexes of new bis(tacn) ligands: Syntheses and structures of copper(II) complexes

Three bis(tacn) ligands 3,5-bis(1,4,7-triazacyclonon-1-ylmethyl)biphenyl (L-phx) (1), 3,5-bis(1,4,7-triazacyclonon-1-ylmethyl)benzoic acid (L-cax) (2) and 3,5-bis(1,4,7-triazacyclonon-1-ylmethyl)-nitrobenzene (L-nix) (3) have been synthesised. Reactions of these ligands with two equivalents of Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O in the presence of NaOH and NH4PF6 resulted in crystallisation of three distinct product classes, viz (i) polymeric [Cu-2(mu-Cl)(2)(L-phx)](PF6)(2)}(n) (5) in which the L-phx ligand bridges two Cu-2 moieties, (ii) tetranuclear [Cu-2(mu-OH)(L-cax)](2)(NO3)(2)(PF6)(2)center dot 2H(2)O (6) in which two "head to tail" L-cax ligands chelate to two Cu-2 moieties, and (iii) dinuclear [Cu-2(mu-OH)(mu-Cl)(L-nix)](NO3)(PF6) (7) where the L-nix ligand chelates to a single Cu-2 centre.
