    The invention relates to a polyamide imide resin having carboxyl groups and modified with an N-methylolated methacryl- or acryl-amide compound and, if desired, further with a bismaleimide compound. The resin has improved properties over conventional polyamide imide resins. When the resin is used, for example in the form of a film or sheeting for printed circuit boards, the film or sheeting has improved heat resistance and enhanced flexural strength and is capable of withstanding soldering baths at high temperatures.

    Crosslinked addition polymer microparticles are produced by dispersion polymerisation of ethylenically unsaturated monomers in aliphatic hydrocarbon liquid, in the presence of a specified dispersion stabiliser, at least one of the monomers containing a hydroxymethylamino or alkoxymethylamino group and at least one other of the monomers containing a functional group, such as a hydroxyl or carboxyl group, which is capable of reacting with the aforesaid group under the polymerisation conditions. The microparticies may be incorporated into coating compositions, preferably in association with an auxiliary polymer which is soluble in the liquid diluent of the composition and is compatible with the film-forming polymer thereof, with resulting improvement in the application characteristics of the composition.

    There is provided a coating material made of a saponification product of a modified ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer containing a cross-linkable olefinically unsaturated monomer. The saponification product is characterized by its intrinsic viscosity not greater than 0.7 dl/g which is measured at 20°C using phenol containing 15 wt% of water as a solvent. This polymer is readily soluble in solvents, and the resulting solution can have concentration as high as 20 to 50 wt% and provide coating film which is as strong as that obtained from the conventional EVOH having a high degree of polymerization.

    Heat resistant binders for flexible nonwoven mats may be prepared using an emulsion polymer comprising 100 parts by weight of acrylate or styrene/acrylate monomers, 3 to 6 parts of a blocked, N-methylol containing comonomer, 0 to 3 parts of water soluble non-blocked N-­methylol containing comonomer and 0 to 5 parts of a multifunctional comonomer. The use of the blocked N-methylol containing comonomer permits the incorporation into the latex binders of higher levels of N-methylol functionality with consequent increase in heat resistance. As such, the binders are useful in the formation of heat resistant flexible mats for use in roofing, flooring and filtering materials.
